Tips for Short Term Storage

Short term storage is perfect for anyone who is home from college, moving to a new apartment in the same building, or for someone who simply needs the space. A lot of people don’t like to get rid of certain items, but hold on to them as long as possible in the event they need to use them down the road. If this is the case, short term storage is perfect for you and your things.

Take Advantage of Valuable Space

Make sure you take advantage of valuable space when storing items short term. For example, if you are storing a dresser and an empty fridge, use them accordingly. You can store towels, other linens, and small items in the drawers of the dresser. In the empty and unplugged fridge you can store toys and other collectibles small enough to fit. Use this space wisely.

Break Down Large Items

Even though it is short term storage, you will likely not have a ton of room, which means you should break down large items. This includes bed frames, tables, desks and any other item possible. Put the hardware in a bag and attach it to each item it belongs to so you do not lose it in the shuffle.

Protect Items from Water

Nothing is 100 percent safe from water. You just cannot be too careful when storing your items for a short period. Any furniture should be kept off the floor by using moving pads. Be sure to cover the furniture in the unit as well to prevent dust and rips when moving other items. If storing boxes, be sure to keep them off the ground as much as possible. Stack them on top of plastic crates or any furniture you have in the unit.

Create Easy Access

If you will be going in and out of the unit occasionally, be sure to create easy access. This includes going back for business files or other items you will need on a regular basis. Either put these items as close to the front of the unit as possible or create a clear path to the items.

What Not to Store

When using short term storage, be sure you do not store any of the following items:

  • Hazardous materials
  • Combustible materials
  • Perishable goods
  • Flammable materials (paint or other chemicals)
  • Gasoline, oil or other liquid used in equipment
